Legionella bacteria found in water at Penn Hospital
Bacteria that can lead to Legionnaires disease has been found in water at Penn Hospital.
The Black Country Partnership NHS Trust foundation has confirmed Legionella bacteria had been detected at the hospital, on Penn Road, during routine water testing.
Access to some sinks, showers and toilets has been blocked as a precautionary measure and temporary toilets have been installed for patients to use.
Specialist filters have also been fitted on some showers so patients can continue to shower and where necessary bottled drinking water has been provided.
Sheila Lloyd, executive director of nursing and director for infection prevention and control, said: "We are taking these results very seriously and are carrying out the maximum precautionary measures to mitigate any risks to patients and staff.
"We have been liaising with external infection control partners including Public Health England who have confirmed the risk to both patients and staff is low.
"Medical staff are being vigilant about symptoms of Legionella associated illness in our client group, particularly more vulnerable patients.
"Staff have been fully informed and provided with information about Legionella and the symptoms of diseases associated with the bacteria.
"To date there have been no confirmed results of any illness resulting from this situation and we will continue our programme of work until the results are clear."
The Trust has started an immediate programme of remedial work to remove any associated risks including turning off the water supply to affected sinks, showers and toilets, as well as disinfection and regular flushing.
