Marc Allen, of Hinchliffe Avenue, in Coseley, says an overhaul of Birmingham New Road close to Manor Primary School is needed to prevent potential injuries or even death.

The 37-year-old's son Lewis attends the school and has to cross the road every day.

He said there had been several near misses at a crossing on the road close to the Wolverhampton and Dudley border.

"It is horrendous down there," he said.

"There is something wrong because cars do not seem to see the lights and there are many near misses.

"Children going to the school in the morning are taking their lives in their own hands and as parents we are very worried.

"We want Wolverhampton City Council to take immediate action.

"Speaking to the police we know they share our concerns.

"If the council can find millions of pounds to refurbish Bilston, it can find money to do this."

The crossing on the Birmingham New Road, which is said to be dangerous as drivers look at the lights ahead of the crossing.

Wolverhampton councillor Malcolm Gwinnett is also calling for 'urgent' work to the road.

He said officers were due to carry out an investigation on the road to examine the problem.

He said: "I have contacted the council's highways department and I think there is a problem there.

"I think it needs to be looked at as a matter of urgency as there have been reports of several near misses.

"Part of the problem is people turning onto the carriageway and not seeing the red light when people are crossing the road.

"That area is due for a £500,000 revamp and I am asking for the council to considering making appropriate changes to the road under this scheme which is due to take place this financial year.

"The parents are well within their right to be campaigning over this - we all know that Birmingham New Road is extremely busy and we need to make sure that the pupils going to school are protected.

Councillor Gwinnett also expressed concerns over other roads around the school, including the A4126 Ettingshall Road that runs adjacent to the school.
