Stretches of the carriageways surrounding the Churchbridge interchange in Cannock will shut from tonight until Friday.

The layout of the lanes will be altered and new traffic lights installed to cut congestion.

Roads linking with the M6 Toll, Great Wyrley and Lodge Lane roundabouts will have lanes closed during the work, which runs from 8.30pm to 5.30am.

The work is part of a national £317 million 'pinch point' improvement programme aimed at reducing congestion across England.

Campaigners have been calling for the junction to be revamped for years, with South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson criticising it for being 'badly designed' and 'causing gridlock at peak times'.

He met Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin last year to push the need for funding
