The Haines Walkway, which links Great Bridge to Sheepwash Country Park, will be officially renamed The Fred Perry Walkway exactly a year after his death.

Alderman Perry served as Labour ward member for Great Bridge on Sandwell Council for more than 14 years and was presented with the honorary title of Alderman in 2008.

He was awarded an MBE in the 2010 New Year's Honours list for his work to improve the lives of people in Great Bridge.

He died after a long illness on September 16 last year, aged 87.

Sandwell Mayor Councillor Derek Rowley will join Mr Perry's widow Irene at the official re-naming ceremony tomorrow at 11am.

Councillor Rowley said: "Fred worked tirelessly for his community both as a ward councillor and with the Royal British Legion.

"This is a fitting way to remember and honour him and the work he did to improve the lives of people in and around Great Bridge."

Even when he retired from the council Mr Perry played an active part in the community. He was known for his work with the Tipton branch of the Royal British Legion and had been both secretary and chairman of the branch. He played an active part in the Poppy Appeal at the branch.

The walkway was opened earlier last year following a £15,000 spruce-up thanks to a grant awarded by Fair Share Trust, which is administered by the Birmingham and Black Country Community Foundation.
