Wolverhampton homes evacuated over explosion scare
Residents had to be evacuated from a block of flats in the early hours of yesterday after a bin was set on fire close to a gas main.
Two fire crews from Wolverhampton and Bilston fire stations were called to the Willenhall Road fire at 1.53am yesterday and were at the scene until 5am.
Fifteen people were taken to Wednesfield Police Station until it was safe to return to their homes.
Resident Gillian Siverns said: "Now we are really concerned because when people have been setting the bins on fire previously there was still a bit of a risk, but to position it by a gas pipe was very dangerous. "If we hadn't been up we probably wouldn't be here."
The flats are managed by Wolverhampton Homes.
Director of housing Mark Henderson said: "Keeping estates safe is really important to us, and our anti-social behaviour team have been working with the police to investigate allegations of anti-social behaviour in this area. We are continuing with the investigation and it may lead to tenancy enforcement."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Wolverhampton City Council's anti-social behaviour team on 01902 551188, or the police on 101.
West Midlands Police is investigating the arson.
