70-year-old farmer attacked after disturbing intruder

A 70-year-old farmer suffered a broken arm and nose after disturbing an intruder at his farm.

The man, heard a noise at his Lapal Farm home in Halesowen, and went out to investigate at 5am this morning.

After seeing a shadowy figure outside the door of the Illey Lane premises he confronted the intruder but the farmer was attacked with his own walking stick and struck over the head several times.

It caused deep cuts and severe blood loss. West Midlands Police said they feared the farmer may lose his eye and he requires surgery on his broken bones.

Det Sgt Leighton Shingles, from Force CID, said: "His attacker is described as a stocky white man in his early 40s. He was wearing a dark sleeveless bomber jacket over a check shirt and dark trousers. He also wore a hat and claimed to come from Bartley Green."

Forensic experts have examined the scene and detectives are trawling the area for CCTV that may have captured the man responsible.

Det Sgt Shingles added: "We are appealing to anyone who may have seen this man acting suspiciously in the area to contact us as soon as possible."
