Liam Phipps pleaded not guilty at Stafford Crown Court to the charge of attempting to murder Sean Bayliss on May 24 this year.

Phipps, aged 20, of High Street, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, spoke only to confirm his name and enter his plea.

Also in the dock with Phipps was Kamal Lodge, who admitted separate offences of violence.

Lodge, aged 23, from Yate, Bristol, pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Jonathan Padley by beating, affray and possessing an offensive weapon, a kitchen knife, in Severn Drive, Perton on May 24.

Mr Robert Price, prosecuting, said Lodge's involvement in the violence was the use of the knife, chasing Mr Alex Bennett and punching him.

Kamal denied a further charge of common assault on Mr Harley Ward and a verdict of not guilty was recorded.

Judge Simon Tonking adjourned the case against Phipps for trial on October 14 at Stafford and Lodge for sentence after the trial.

The judge remanded both defendants in custody.
