Woman arrested after toddler hit and officer assaulted in Wolverhampton supermarket

A woman has been arrested after a toddler was assaulted in a Wolverhampton supermarket.

An off-duty police officer witnessed the 26-year-old woman hitting a child in Aldi, off Birmingham Road near the city centre.

The officer was also assaulted during the incident.

Police were called to the supermarket at 6.50pm on Monday and the woman, from Bilston, remains in custody.

West Midlands Police spokeswoman Gina Lycett said: "It is believed that the off duty officer was assaulted after he approached a woman after witnessing her hit a child.

"A 26-year-old woman from Bilston was arrested on suspicion of assault and was taken to a local police station where she remains in custody."
