Council blocks Wolverhampton Aldi store plan

A supermarket's plans to open earlier have been rejected by Wolverhampton City Council.

A planning application for the Aldi store on Dudley Road to open half an hour earlier at 6.30am was rejected yesterday.

The store currently receives deliveries from 7am and opens for business at 8am.

Labour councillor John Rawley said he felt sorry for the company but that the earlier opening time was a step too far for local residents.

"I do a quite a bit of shopping there myself as I can just go with a rucksack rather than use the car," he said.

"Aldi's profile is changing as they're expanding and trying to appeal to more middle-class customers."

The store in Fighting Cocks has been open for more than 15 years and was one of the first to open in the region.

The company had plans to appeal the decision.
