Back on home soil today she led the way in a new running and swimming event named in her honour - The Jodie Stimpson Aquathlon - at Sandwell Valley Country Park in West Bromwich.

And it turned into a family affair when her five-months pregnant sister Carrie took part in the swim across Swan Pool and mum Judy joined her in the sprint.

The 25-year-old athlete from Oldbury, who spent two hours after the competition signing autographs and posing for pictures, said her feet still had not touched the ground since her success in Glasgow.

She said: "It's been overwhelming - manic, to be honest, but absolutely fantastic.

"It's so great to be back home catching up with family and friends and at the same time doing something like this, which is aimed at encouraging newbies to try triathlons. This is what it's all about."

Looking back on her Commonwealth success, she said: "It's been crazy - I'm normally tucked up in bed by 8.30pm but I've been staying up way past my bedtime. Being interviewed by Gary Linekar was one of the highlights.

"I also got to meet great athletes like Victoria Pendleton and I even got tweeted by Kelly Holmes - I retweeted that one a few times."

Around 100 people competed in the event organised jointly by Jodie's old club, The Oldbury Swimming and Triathlon Club, and Sport England.

Jodie said: "It was great that my sister took part as well - she's expecting in December - and my mum ran. Not seeing my family is the hardest part of this lifestyle - but Skype is a life saver.

"We all went out for a meal in Birmingham when I came back but then I had to get back to training."

Jodie is flying back to France tomorrow to meet up with her coach to start training for final two events in the Triathlon World Series taking place in Sweden and Canada.
