Fredrick Manroe, 79, who suffers from dementia, was last seen by his carer at his home address in Dale Close, Tipton at 5pm on Wednesday but had left when the carer returned at 8am the next day.

At around 10pm last night hospital staff called police to say that a man, matching Mr Manroe's description had been brought in.

A member of the public had called the ambulance service to share their concerns about the man found wandering in a confused state near to the rugby club in the Delves area of Walsall. Ambulance staff then transferred Mr Manroe to hospital for checks.

Inspector Simon Rowbotham, from West Bromwich police station, said: "We're so pleased that this case has had a happy ending… Mr Manroe is safe and well.

"I would like to thank the person who called the ambulance service to report their concerns about the man who turned out to be Mr Manroe. I'd also like to thank those people who called us to report sightings of the 79-year-old earlier in the day. Community spirit is clearly alive and well in the Black Country."
