Cheryl Cole and Wolverhampton Mayor in Radio One banter

As far as unlikely encounters go, this was right up there.

The multi-million pound record selling, X Factor judging, L'Oreal-selling, gorgeous global singing sensation that is Cheryl Cole.

And the 80-year-old Mayor of Wolverhampton and ward member for Spring Vale.

One of them recently spent thousands of pounds on an outlandish tattoo on their bum. The other is Mike Heap.

The two came together on BBC Radio 1 for a feature on Greg James' drive-time show, where the presenter has to guess where the mayor on the other end of the phone line is from.

And the improbable pair struck up an unlikely rapport in a charming meeting, broadcast live to millions.

Cheryl, who earlier this month married French restaurateur Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini after a whirlwind romance, even wished Wolves all the best in the team's fight to get back into the Premier League.

The 31-year-old star was a guest presenter on the show and spilled the beans on her shock marriage, as well as X Factor life, before playing an impromptu game of miniature cricket with the Radio 1 host.

She needed just three of five questions before managing to guess that Councillor Heap was mayor of Wolverhampton in the 'Mayor From Where?' game, a regular feature on the show.

"Hello Mr Mayor, how are you," Cheryl began as the game kicked off.

After cordial introductions former Girls Aloud singer Cheryl began her line of questioning by asking the mayor if he was close to a beach.

"Oh, nowhere near Cheryl, miles away," Councillor Heap said.

The mayor told Greg that it would take between two and three hours to travel to the city in question by train.

Cheryl's probing queries continued when she asked Councillor Heap what day bin collections took place, to which he replied: "The bin collections in this place are every day of the week."

Greg asked if there were many famous people in the area.

Councillor Heap said: "Of course there are, we are bristling with famous people. Gwynneth Button (correct name Button Gwinnett), who as you probably know Cheryl signed the Declaration of Independence in America.

"This might give the game away here, we have Liam Payne. And Beverley Knight hails from here."

Getting her One Direction members mixed up, Cheryl guessed at Doncaster, where Louis Tomlinson is from.

A jovial Councillor Heap imitated Cheryl's Geordie accent, saying 'why aye bonnie lass' when asked if there was a big football team close by, leading the singer to guess the correct answer.

"Oh Cheryl, you've got it in one," Councillor Heap said: "I know you knew where Gwynneth was from, that's obvious."

He added: "You're speaking to me in the great city of Wolverhampton, I'm looking out at the moment over Molineux, the football ground where Billy Wright held sway and we were the best team in Europe in the 1950s."

After praising the virtues of Wolverhampton Wanderers and proclaiming the team would soon be back conquering Europe, Councillor Heap, sat in the Civic Centre, said: "There's a load of staff sitting all around me and we want to wish Cheryl all the best in getting to your fourth number one with Crazy Stupid Love."

She replied: "Thank you Michael. I wish you and the Wolverhampton team all the best getting back up to the Premier League."

"Well that's very good of you," he said.

And so ended one of the least plausible encounters heard on the nation's airwaves.

Cheryl went back to her glamours celebrity lifestyle, while Councillor Heap attended the Wolverhampton Young Citizen of the Year awards.

Cheryl is indeed of course to be number one in tomorrow's singles chart.

And she also appears to be number one in the heart of the city's venerable mayor.

After the show he told the Express & Star: "I think my Yorkshire accent might have confused her.

"It was really good fun, I thought that Cheryl was a right bonnie lass."
