The accident happened at around 9.20am on the M6 northbound between junction eight for the M5 link at Great Barr and junction nine for Wednesbury.
But queues of traffic built up quickly going five miles back to junction six at Spaghetti Junction.
Three cars - a Vauxhall Astra, a Lexus and Mazda Six - crashed blocking two lanes of the busy stretch of motorway.
A man was trapped inside the Mazda due to a damaged door.
Fire crews from Walsall and West Bromwich cut the man out but it is believed he has not to have suffered any injury.
