Firefighters and paramedics were called to Dixon Street after the skip lorry crashed into the low railway bridge around 10.15am.

The lorry, being driven by a man in his 40s, was heading in the direction of Bilston Road when it collided with the bridge.

The road was closed by police, causing tailbacks on Bilston Road. Rail services continued to operate while the lorry was being removed.

It is the second such incident in the city this week. On Wednesday a Old Heath Road in Heath Town was closed for two-and-a-half hours and rail services disrupted after a container truck became stuck under a low bridge.

Justine Eustace of West Midlands Fire Service said the driver of the lorry was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

"The driver was out of his lorry by the time the fire service arrived," she said.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith said the man was taken to New Cross Hospital with leg and minor head injuries.

Jon Crampton of Network Rail said an inspection of the bridge found no structural damage.

It is the second time a lorry has crashed into the bridge in the space of a month.

On June 24 rail services between Wolverhampton and Sandwell and Dudley were halted after a lorry collided with the bridge.
