The crash happened on Hobnock Road in Essington at around 6.25am, and the road was closed for three hours.

The driver was found collapsed at the wheel of the car and despite the best efforts of paramedics, he died after being taken to hospital.

A spokeswoman for Staffordshire Police said: "The man has not yet been identified and the road was closed for three hours as specialist officers from the Regional Collision Investigation Unit examined the scene."

Councillor David Clifft, chair of Essington Parish Council, said: "Our thoughts go out with the family of this man. We wish a speedy recovery to anyone else who may have been involved.

"While that road is a fast road it is normally a safe road. We don't tend to have any problems with it."
