Plane crashes after take off

A plane crashed in a field shortly after it took off from Guernsey Airport.

Two people inside the light aircraft escaped unhurt but were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The airport was closed while firefighters tackled a suspected fuel leak from the plane, covering it with foam.

Nearby homes were evacuated after the crash, which happened shortly after 5pm.

Residents were allowed to return homes shortly before 9pm.

Airport director Colin Le Ray said the single-engine private aircraft reported an incident to the east of the airfield shortly after take off.

An eyewitness reported seeing black smoke coming from the back of the plane.
