Nine-year-old Merridale Primary School pupil Madison Hawley won first prize for her eye-catching drawing of fruits and vegetables to promote healthy eating.

Her artwork will now be displayed on around 2,000 bags for life, which will be available to buy at the new Sainsbury's St Mark's superstore which is set to open in a few weeks.

Madison, who is from the Penn Fields area of Wolverhampton, said: "I love drawing but didn't think I'd win.

"I can't wait to see the bags."

Year five pupil Madison was presented with a £50 Sainsbury's gift card at her school in Aspen Way.

Paul Percox, the new store manager, presented her with the prize.

He said: "We were very impressed with all designs that came in for the bags for life competition.

"I would like to thank everyone who took part; we had some fantastic entries and Madison's work was the pick of the bunch."

Students from various year groups at the primary school were invited to take part in the competition.

Runners-up Eesha Bhardwaj and Ghazala Sakander each received £20 Sainsbury's gift cards for their designs and the school will also be given some 'Active Kids' equipment for its involvement.

Sixty entries were submitted for the competition, with some also received from Anand Primary School.

Meanwhile, bosses at the store on Raglan Street, off the city's ring road, say construction is progressing well and the supermarket is on track to open its doors next month, when the bags for life will be on sale.
