Man with 'bats and samurai sword' arrested after six hour stand off

A man said to have barricaded himself in a house with a knife, bats and a samurai sword was tasered by police after a stand-off lasting almost six hours.

Police were called after reports of a man with a knife acting violently in a house in Great Barr at around 8.50pm last night.

They arrived at the house, in Valley Road, in Hamstead, Great Barr, and found a man had barricaded himself inside.

Police negotiators were brought into try to end the stand-off which went into the early hours.

One officer received minor injuries as items were being thrown through a window, police said.

Police deployed a taser to bring the incident to a close at around 4am today.

A 32-year-old man was arrested and is currently in police custody helping with inquiries.
