The 71-year-old, who became Lord Bilston after retiring as an MP, died in February at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer.

His funeral in Bilston, where the Labour peer had lived his entire life, was attended by hundreds of mourners including the former international development secretary Clare Short.

But Lord Bilston's brother Councillor Bert Turner said there were many politicians and others based in London who had been unable to make it to the funeral and wanted to pay their respects.

Around 200 people are expected to attend the ceremony in the robing room at the House of Lords.

The memorial will be opened by Lord Bilston's friend and colleague Lord Grocott, a former MP for both Telford and Lichfield.
