Tipton Carnival postponed due to storms

Thunderstorms and flashfloods have caused a Black Country carnival to be postponed today.

The Tipton Carnival in Jubilee Park in the town had been due to take place today.

But torrential rain and a lightning storm hammered the Midlands at around 7am.

Organisers described the park as looking like a 'swimming pool' and events due to take place today will now place tomorrow (Sunday).

Karen Simms, who is part of the Tipton Community Association, who organised the event spoke of her disappointment.

She said: "We're obviously disappointed but we were aware that the weather was going to be poor this morning so we monitored the situation.

"It came down heavy and the park is like a swimming pool so it wouldn't be safe having an event of this size in such conditions.

"Yesterday we had the car boot sale here which went very well. You can plan most things but what you can't plan is the weather."

The carnival has been held for 49 years and attracts crowds of up to 5,000. It has only been cancelled once in its history in 2009 due to poor weather.
