Woman rescued after burning food sparked fire at Staffordshire home

A sleeping householder was woken up by firefighters after burning food caused a fire at her home.

The woman was led to safety from the flat in Oak Lane, Burntwood, yesterday after a report of smoke coming from the property.

Crews from Chase Terrace and Cannock attended the scene and had to don breathing gear to rescue her.

A Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "The fire was caused by burned food. One lady was rescued from the rear bedroom. She was asleep and two firefighters went in and got her out. They walked her to safety.

"The ambulance service was also called to the scene and they treated her for the effects of smoke inhalation."

The woman, who was alone in the flat, was given oxygen therapy at the scene following the fire which was reported shortly after 9.20am.
