The men pushed past the woman to get access to her Oldbury home after flashing fake warrant cards, police have revealed.

The victim had to be taken to hospital following the late night ordeal, where she received treatment for shock.

Police today said it was not yet clear what had been taken from the pensioner's home.

They today launched an appeal for people to beware and to check the identity of anyone who knocks at their door.

Sgt Jamie Neadle, from the Bristnall neighbourhood team, said: "Two males purporting to be police officers forced their way past the elderly lady and caused an injury to her.

"She had to be taken to hospital, where she was mainly treated for shock.

"The message we want to get out there is that police officers will happily show their warrant cards whenever requested and will be happy to wait until the resident is satisfied.

"No police officer will have any problem with being challenged or will be wait for information to be verified by the force.

"If people still want further reassurance, they can ring the police on 101 to check the identity of a caller."

Sgt Neadle added the burglary, which happened at around 10pm on Tuesday, was being treated as an isolated incident.

"That's the way we want it to stay," he added.
