Dudley South MP Chris Kelly officially opened the new development at The Kingswinford School.

The cash has been invested in new teaching facilities and the modernisation of other areas at the science academy on Water Street after an initial grant of £500,000 was added towards school funds and both students and staff are delighted with the results.

The new building houses a new English block, drama and music classrooms. Food technology, textiles and science rooms have also all been transformed by the successful bid.

Mr Kelly and The Kingswinford School's Chair of Governing Body, Mrs Janice Daines launched the grand opening of the school's new facilities and governors, staff, residents and students attended the special opening ceremony which included a buffet lunch as part of the celebrations.

Bronwyn Hedley, Head teacher of The Kingswinford School Science Academy said: "It is very exciting to mark this milestone in the school's history with such wonderful facilities and to celebrate it with such prestigious guests.

"We are entering a new phase in the history of The Kingswinford School. Generations of students have learnt here since the school was opened in 1939, 65 years ago. Now, there are more generations who will benefit from the new buildings.

"When we applied for the capital build project money way back last year, we were optimistic and kept our fingers firmly crossed. It is extremely competitive to get such grants and when we heard that we had been successful, we were so excited. To be able to improve the learning and teaching spaces for our students and staff is a true privilege and opportunity."

Chris Kelly MP added: "I was delighted to officially open the new classroom block and refurbished classrooms at The Kingswinford School. The Academy status school was successful in its bid to the Government's Education Funding Agency and I congratulate head teacher Mrs Hedley, her leadership team and all of the staff on their achievements."

During the event, Mrs Janice Daines also announced that the school has been granted an additional £416,000 in additional funding and part of this funding will be used to replace the schools heating and boiler systems.
