Former West Bromwich social club to be sold off

A former social club in West Bromwich has been deemed surplus to requirements and will be sold off to boost council coffers under new plans.

Sandwell Council bosses are considering proposals for the future of the former Bromford Lane Social Club and car park in Coyne Road.

The premises shut last year after the club went into administration and have remained vacant since then.

The council is looking at selling the freehold for the site, which its says would be 'attractive redevelopment opportunity'.

One of the options being looked at was renting out the building as a licensed social club.

But the council said a rental valuation would be needed by an external specialist who had not been commissioned 'largely due to the costs and timescales involved'.

A report, which went before members of the authority's asset management and land disposal cabinet committee, said since being vacated, there had been some interest in running the premises as a social club from outside parties.

The council has said if the property was to be retained for leasing purposes, repair work may need to be carried out on the building. Bosses said the site had not yet been actively marketed.

The report, written by directors including regeneration and economy boss Nick Bubalo says: "The site does however offer an attractive redevelopment opportunity, subject to planning, and sits on a main arterial route into West Bromwich town centre.

"The freehold disposal would generate a capital receipt, provide a solution for an under-utilised asset and bring forward redevelopment within the locality.

"It is the intention that the property is disposed of in its current condition, which should ensure the maximum capital receipt within the shortest timescale.

An options appraisal was undertaken, which indicates that disposal is the best option, the report adds.

It comes after plans to sell off a vandalised plot of land in Tipton were also revealed.
