This was the dramatic scene in Bilston today when a lorry overturned on a major route.

The lucky male driver had a fortunate escape and somehow walked away unhurt from the crash, which happened near the Black Country Route in Bilston.

But more than 20 litres of diesel and fluid was spilled onto the road, with around two litres leaking into the drainage system.

Oxford Street, by Bilston Town Football Club, was closed for more than an hour and a half. And the Black Country Route was closed at its junction with the M6 when the lorry was pulled clear.

The large articulated lorry also shed a large amount of waste timber onto the road, which it was transporting at the time.

Police and firefighters attended the scene after being called at around 10.20am.

Crew commander Neil Baker, from Bilston Fire Station, said: "The driver was unhurt.

"Luckily the trailer turned over but the cab was still on its four wheels.

"He was just a bit shocked.

"He reckoned there was 100 litres of fuel in his tank so it could have been worse than it was.

"It was just old rotting timber and wood that he was transporting – luckily it went on the verge side, not the road. We were there for an hour mostly to clear up the scene and make sure he was okay."
