Wolverhampton University building takes shape

With its sleek glass front, this picture shows how work is forging ahead on a new £25 million science block for the University of Wolverhampton.

The new block, in Wolverhampton City Centre, is progressing well, bosses say.

For months it has been shrouded in tarpaulin and screens, but the progress made on the glass fronted building can now be clearly seen in Stafford Street.

It will be used by up to 2,500 undergraduates and 150 staff, and is expected to be handed over to the university in August, when it will be kitted out with equipment.

Students are expected to move in at the start of October.

Demolition work on the former landmark MB Building began in September last year.

It comes as work got under way on a new £18 million business school being created by the university.

Preparatory work is under way on the new building, which is also in the city centre.

The hunt had been on for a contractor to carry out the work on the new business school, which is being built on the junction of Molineux Street and Camp Street.

James Allen, spokesman for the university, today revealed a contractor had been selected.

"Preparatory work is under way, which has involved diverting underground services and then an archaeological inspection," he said.

"Once that's all done, work should start on site some time in May." Plans for the six-storey business school were given the backing of planners in October last year.

It will boast space for tutorials, workshops and seminars, as well as a social space and cafe.

Work is expected to be completed by May 2015. University bosses have hailed the positive effect it will have on the city and its business community.

Both developments are part of a wider £45 million overhaul of the university's campuses.

Other work has included the former Varsity bar, bought by the university, already being transformed to become the university's main entrance.

Meanwhile, improvements have been made at the Walsall campus in Gorway Road.
