Bilston leisure centre land earmarked for homes
New houses will be built on the site of the former Bilston Leisure Centre, under plans unveiled today, as part of a scheme to create almost 100 homes in the town.
Members of Wolverhampton Council's cabinet will on Wednesday be recommended to endorse proposals for 33 new homes on the site of the old complex in Proud Lane.
It will be in addition to the 64 homes already planned for the adjacent land in Mount Pleasant.
The centre was demolished in October 2012 following the opening of the £18.6 million Bert Williams Leisure Centre in 2011.
The news was welcomed by Councillor Phil Page, who represents Bilston North ward on the authority.
He said there was an acute need for more high-quality housing in the Bilston area.
"Many people want to live in Bilston, and we need to build more houses for them to live in," he said.
"We did a survey a while back which found, after Tettenhall, Bilston was the most popular area of Wolverhampton.
"I'm not surprised, because it is a great place to live, there are some wonderful people, so I would welcome this scheme to build more houses."
The report that goes before the cabinet next week also calls on the authority to formally endorse changes to the £178 million Bilston Urban Village scheme, which will see the proposed number of homes increased from 500 to 625.
If the report is approved, the plans will go out to a six-week consultation period, where interested parties will be invited to have their say. The amendments follow the publication of the Bilston Area Action Plan last year.
The plan will also be amended to allow for an increased number of homes on land in Thompson Avenue.
