The original Darlaston Town FC folded last year but a new-look club has been formed under a new committee with the aim of re-entering the non-league next season.

When it emerged Darlaston was going to fold from the Midlands League after 139 years a series of public meeting were held and it was agreed to fight to keep a club in the town.

Darlaston Town (1874) FC has been formed and the committee has been raising thousands of pounds for the team. A public meeting will now take place at Darlaston All Active, Willenhall Road, Darlaston, tomorrow from 7.30pm to inform supporters of their intentions for the future.

Neil Chambers, chairman of the new club said: "The goodwill shown to us has been fantastic and nearly 100 people attended both public meetings. We are optimistic that we will again have a good turn out."

Around £5,000 has been collected to cover setting up costs such as rent, registration fees, insurances, football equipment and kits, with the committee holding a series of fundraisers to towards the £5,000 needed to cover running costs throughout the season.

The existing city ground base needs new fences and walls and talks are being held with Walsall Council to decide whether the club will stay there or move to a new location.

An auction was held recently in aid of Darlaston and items up for grabs included a signed Kenny Dalglish Liverpool shirt, which sold for £120.

Darlaston Town was founded in 1874, and believed to be the second oldest non-league team in the country.
