Wolverhampton restaurant opens on revamped site
A new restaurant has opened in part of a city where a £13.4 million rescue plan has been put in place to boost it.
Restaurant Skalska has opened in the Southside area of Wolverhampton.
It has opened in Cleveland Parade, Cleveland Street, an area which has been revamped following the disappointment of the failed £300m Summer Row shopping centre development. The restaurant has moved into the final empty unit in a parade there.
Council chiefs say 'significant progress' has been made in attracting new businesses there and revamping derelict and eyesore properties.
The Southside plan was unveiled three years ago following the failure of Summer Row. Grants have been used to refurbish 22 businesses, helping them relocate and helping to buy new businesses.
Properties that were in a poor condition have been flattened to improve the appearance and security of the area.A small car park has been created at the former site of 31 Cleveland Street. which will be let to a business. Andrius Anuska, owner of Restaurant Skalska, said: "It is early days but the restaurant is doing well and we are attracting customers from across the Midlands.
"It is a challenge for any new business starting up anywhere but we are confident for the future. We also received a lot of support from the council, which we are very grateful for."
Regeneration chief Councillor Peter Bilson said:
"We have seen some significant positive changes to the Southside area since the plan was launched and it is extremely pleasing to see so many new, independent businesses such as this one open in the area."
