Sainsbury's is building a store on Raglan Street in Wolverhampton City Centre.

As part of work to alter the roads around the store, which will open in late June, traffic lights at Chapel Ash Island will be switched off until Thursday while the signals are upgraded.

From today resurfacing work will be carried out on Lea Road, at its junction with Penn Road.

The work will be done over four nights from 7pm to 6am. Lane restrictions will be in operation on Penn Road, and Lea Road will be closed at its junction with Penn Road.

The supermarket giant is footing the bill for the roadworks. Work began on site last October and heralded the beginning of the end of what has become a decade-long saga in Wolverhampton.

A row erupted between Sainsbury's and Tesco over who could build a store on Raglan Street, sparking a bitter legal battle.

Council regeneration chief Peter Bilson said: "These essential road improvements are progressing well and will complement the new store. "The vast majority of the road works have been carried out off peak to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum."
