The reborn team secured only the club's 10th promotion in its history with a 0-2 victory at Crewe.

And the gold and black army are now just two wins away from securing the League One title.

Just over 2,200 fans headed to Crewe to cheer Kenny Jackett's team to victory, including rock legend Robert Plant, a vice president of the club.

When the final whistle blew they poured onto the pitch mobbing the delighted players including Danny Batth from Brierley Hill. who has typified the new-look team's homegrown passion after an era of highly-paid flops.

Today, 'King' Kenny thanked the fans and said: "Right from the start the fans have embraced it and backed me, which I am very thankful for, and they got right behind the team and been incredible."

Midfielder Dave Edwards who scored on Saturday said: "You have really got to put your hands up to the supporters and say 'thank you'. So much credit needs to go to the fans because they've really played their part this season."

And club captain Sam Ricketts added: "I've won promotions to the Premier League but to captain a side that has gone up and one that has had so much support makes me very proud. The away fans in particular have been amazing – we've sold out nearly every away game."

Wolves Vice president Baroness Wolverhampton, Rachael Heyhoe-Flint said: "We are very lucky to have the fans that we do. They were terrifically well behaved.

"They came onto the pitch after the game on Saturday and really enjoyed giving shoulder rides to some of the players."

Today civic chiefs hailed the promotion saying it would provide a boost to the city as well as the club.

Meanwhile a football finance expert from University of Wolverhampton's Business School said the club could expect higher television revenue of around £2million next season thanks to international coverage of the Championship.

Andrew Jones, a researcher at the university, said: "Promotion will be worth about £5 million to the club, and will help local businesses, such as pubs and bars.

"There will be an extra £2 million from the television deal, but there will also be more fans going to the matches."

Nigel Babb, Wolverhampton president of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce, said the promotion will help out local businesses.

He said: "It is an opportunity to put Wolverhampton back on the map. Football is an international language and it will help businesses when they are seen on the international stage."

And Wolverhampton City Council leader Roger Lawrence said: "I remember the feeling of deflation and even anger around the city after they went down. Now there should be a real feel good factor."
