Hednesford's Taylor back in action after cancer fight

Hednesford Town midfielder Kris Taylor is ready to return to action tomorrow – just over two months after he was diagnosed with cancer.

The former Walsall player and Wolves and Manchester United trainee has declared himself fit for the Pitmen's clash with Guiseley just two weeks after completing his treatment for testicular cancer.

Father-of-one Taylor, aged 30, had surgery to remove a tumour in early February after being diagnosed on January 31. He is now ready to rejoin Hednesford's promotion campaign after completing a course of chemotherapy.

"I'm feeling good," said Cannock-based Taylor, who has also played for Hereford, Port Vale and AFC Telford. My prognosis was as good as it could have been and over the last two or three weeks I've been working hard on my fitness to get myself back and available for selection, which is where I am now.

"I had the operation in the first week of February and then in the first week of March I had a course of chemotherapy, which meant four days in hospital.

"Then I had a booster the following week and another one the week after through injections.

"Now I just have to have regular checks and I have to go every couple of months for the first year. The tumour was removed and the CT scan showed nothing, but obviously if there are any stray cells they have hopefully been killed by the chemo."

Taylor was determined to return to the field after his diagnosis but admitted he feared his season was over.

Now he is set to return tomorrow with Rob Smith's men needing three wins from their remaining four games to make certain of a play-off spot.

"That 'C-word' was scary, but these things sometimes happen and you've got to get on with it," he said.
