She said yes! Wolves couple get engaged at half-time
A Wolves-mad couple are preparing for their own big match – after a proposal on the pitch during today's game against Peterborough.
Les Roberts, 42 from Wellington, asked Julie Shinton, 46 from Wednesfield, to marry her at half-time of the game, which Wolves won 2-0.
A tearful Julie said 'yes' and the happy couple, who now live in Wellington, Telford, are now preparing for their wedding in September abroad after celebrating with drinks in The Goose pub in Wolverhampton city centre after the game.
"We met at Molineux on the South Bank two years ago so it seemed appropriate that I asked Julie to marry me here," said Les, who is manager of fruit and vegetable company Rowlands in Shrewsbury.
"I had my speech all made up but it took Julie by surprise – she was crying her eyes out!
"I said 'the South Bank is where we started out and our love knows no division - the Wolves motto.
"'And Molineux is where I'm going to go down on one knee because that's where we met, so will you marry me?
"To hear her say yes was lovely and it was great that all the family were there to see it.
"I think she thought I was going to propose to her when we go to Majorca on holiday soon in front of 25 friends and family.
"But to do it in front of over 23,000 people at Molineux was better!"
Julie, who is a delivery officer for Royal Mail in Wednesfield, said: "I'm on top of the world – I'm the happiest woman alive!
"I knew he was planning to ask me to marry him because he said to me 'we need to pick an engagement ring up next week'.
"I thought it would happen in Majorca, so I never thought he'd do it at Molineux because no one gets engaged there!"
Les lured Julie onto the pitch by telling her she'd won a pizza in a competition after the winning ticket was left on her seat.
"I collected the pizza – I don't even like pizza – but the proposal didn't enter my head," said Julie.
"Then I saw him grab the mike and I couldn't believe it.
"But of course I said 'yes' – he's a bloke who ticks all the boxes."
Julie's daughter Charmaine, 29, from Ashmore Park, Wednesfield – who passed her driving test yesterday – introduced the couple after Les and her got chatting at games and used to meet her by the brick memorial on the concourse of the South Bank, where Les's late father 'Jazz' has a brick.
Les added: "Julie walked over to me and said 'you're fit' and the next game she apologised for what she'd said so I replied 'what, so I'm not fit then?' and she said 'you know you are'.
"Anyway there was a home game where we were three or four goals down at half-time and I said to her afterwards 'would you like to come for a drink with me after the game?' and she agreed and we've been together ever since."
Julie added: "When I said he was fit that's unlike me because I'm normally shy.
"But it was one of those moments in your life when I thought if I hadn't have said anything, I'd have regretted it."
Les – a Wolves fan since leaving school in 1989 - has been a season ticket holder for 10 years and Julie, who has followed the club since 1979, for 15.
The couple now have adjoining seats – EE 114 and 115 in the South Bank since moving in together 18 months ago.
Les, who has a son Liam, 20 and a daughter Lynette, 22 - both from Wellington, was divorced two years ago and Julie, who also has a son Alan, 22, has been divorced for nine years.
And the happy couple saw Wolves triumph as they beat Peterborough 2-0.T
The club even found time to congratulate the couple:
