Police, fire crews and paramedics were called to Bayer Street, Coseley, near to the town's railway station at around 8.15am.

West Midlands Police tweeted the boy had been 'dangling something over the railway bridge' and they said emergency services had been called following reports of a large explosion.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said the boy had come into contact with railway wires and was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Resident Jody Nicholls said she had been in the living room of her home in Broad Street playing with her children when she saw teenagers on the bridge.

"Then I heard a massive bang and saw smoke rising from behind the bridge. It covered the line. A short time later I saw the teenagers walking away from the bridge and one of them looked like he was hurt. I told him come into my house while a neighbour called for the ambulance.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith said: "On arrival, crews discovered a male teenager who had come into contact with railway wires near to the footbridge over the tracks. He was assessed and treated on scene for serious burns to his leg and hand which amounted to approximately ten per cent burns. "

Train services were delayed for about 15 minutes.
