Wolverhampton pools will open on bank holiday

Popular paddling pools used every year by hundreds of Wolverhampton families will be open for May Bank Holiday, it has been announced.

A number of outdoor events have been cancelled by Wolverhampton City Council in the wake of £123 million budget cuts, but bosses have confirmed that the pools at Tettenhall and East Park would open as normal.

Both pools are popular with families who wish to enjoy hot weather, and last year Tettenhall was kept open for an extended period due to the long summer.

Councillor Elias Mattu, cabinet member for leisure and communities, said he is delighted the pools will stay open. The sites attract thousands of people making the most of the warm weather.

He said: "The paddling pools at Tettenhall and East Park are always very popular, attracting people from far and wide.

"I am delighted that, despite the Government cuts, we will be able to provide these important amenities again this year – and hope that they will both be really well used once more."

It was confirmed this week that the pools will be open on the late May Bank Holiday as usual, depending on weather.

It was announced last week that Wolvestock, the popular country music festival, would be scrapped, while other major outdoor events would be reviewed.

Councillor Jonathan Yardley, ward councillor for Tettenhall Regis which covers the pool, said it would be a false economy to close the pools to save money.

He said: "People come from all over to visit the pools, especially during the school holidays. The police did a survey a few years ago that showed that there were 3,000 people per day visiting the green."

A council report last month said that events for ity Show, bonfires, Christmas lights switch ons, Diwali, Vaisakhi, St Goerge's day and Wolvestock, would be reviewed to save money.
