The man was cutting down the tree in his back garden in Greenfield Avenue when it fell and landed on him at around 11am.

The man was complaining of pain in his lower back, pelvis, lower abdomen and neck when paramedics arrived at the scene, and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

Claire Brown, a spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service, said: ""The man had reportedly been cutting down the tree when it landed on top of him. A neighbour quickly pulled the man from beneath the tree and, when crews arrived, he was lying on the floor in pain.

"Upon assessment, ambulance staff and the doctor found he had left sided pain in his pelvis, back, lower abdomen and neck. He was given pain relief before being immobilised with a neck collar, spinal board and pelvic splint.

"The man was taken by land ambulance on blue lights to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham."
