It is the first phase of the revamp of the Old Square site in Walsall which will see a new Primark and Co-op open next year.

The demolition phase is due to take four months as part of the £21m plans.

Construction and infrastructure firm Morgan Sindall has been appointed to deliver the town centre scheme.

Walsall Council agreed to pump in up to £8m from its own cash reserves to kick-start the long-awaited project, which will create around 150 jobs through the new stores.

It involves the demolition of the former Tesco building and surrounding units and the construction of a new 54,000 sq ft development, which will house Primark and the Midcounties Co-operative's food store.

Walsall regeneration councillor Adrian Andrew said: "We're delighted to appoint Morgan Sindall as contractor for this scheme.

"This new development will breathe further life into the town centre and this investment shows we're looking for a long-term revival of the town. Creating jobs and providing opportunities for retailers to flourish and provide an improved town centre offer here in Walsall is one of our top priorities."

Ben Reid, chief executive of The Co-op, said: "The Midcounties Co-operative has strong roots in Walsall that date back over 125 years.

"We have identified a real demand for a food store offering in the town centre, which is why we are investing in a new store at the Old Square Shopping Centre redevelopment. We are looking forward to launching a store that meets the needs of the Walsall community next year."

The project is due to be completed in spring 2015.
