A gun-wielding robber attempted to raid a petrol station near Wolverhampton – but left empty handed.

He struck at the Murco Garage, on the corner of Codsall Road and Pendeford Avenue in Claregate, at around 2.30pm on Tuesday.

A terrified worker called police, who arrived shortly afterwards and cordoned off the site for forensic investigations.

Nothing was taken or damaged in the attempted robbery and no one was injured.

Police say a Wolverhampton man, aged 20, was arrested in connection with the raid yesterday and is now helping officers with their enquiries.

But onlookers were shocked by the aftermath, saying the area was usually quiet.

Collette Henry, from Wolverhampton, was returning from Claregate Primary School when she saw police had cordoned off the petrol station.

She said: "It's all taped off and there's police cars still there – one either end.

"I've just picked up one of my children from school. You don't expect it, do you?"

One neighbour who lived near to the garage added: "I know the guy who runs it and he's a nice guy who works hard and is pleasant with customers. He has a good rapport with them so this is a shock. I'd say whoever did this are after things from the off-licence inside the garage more than money from the petrol.

"This isn't the type of area this happens in. Most the people who live around here are over the age of 65."

Police have given no description of the suspect at this stage and no CCTV footage has been released.

Investigations are continuing.
