Yobs have smashed three windows at a charity shop in an attack branded 'mindless vandalism' by volunteers.

Staff at the Sue Ryder Care shop in Cannock - which only opened in September - were shocked to find three panes had been shattered when they arrived to open up.

It is believed the yobs had used a sledge hammer. Volunteers faced a long clean-up operation after shards of glass were strewn throughout the Stafford Road store.

One of the three windows smashed in an attack branded 'mindless vandalism' by volunteers

Store manager Ellen Tranter, aged 38, said: "We got in at quarter past eight and walked across the car park and saw there were three massive holes in the windows where someone had hit them with a sledge hammer.

"It makes you so angry - we have lost valuable time and money all because of this.

"How can someone do this to a charity? It's not as if we are a big company - we are trying to help people and this is how some people treat us. It's just mindless vandalism."

Mrs Tranter said the charity, which cares for terminally ill people, is looking for donations of clothes to help make up the shortfall.

Staffordshire Police spokeswoman Hazel Dockery said officers were investigating but no arrests had been made.
