The crash happened in Halesowen Road, Netherton at about 5.25pm yesterday.

A long stretch of the road between Cole Street and Cradley Road is expected to remain shut until at least 8.30pm.

A Mazda collided with a van before hitting an oncoming Renault Megane which contained a nine-year-old boy.

The Mazda driver, in his late 30s, had already been pulled out by paramedics when fire crews arrived, but they had to cut the roof off to free a passenger, in his early 40s.

West Midlands traffic police tweeted this picture of the Mazda after the crash.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman John Hawker said they had suffered multiple injuries. Fire crews said they were conscious.

They were taken to Russells Hall and Sandwell hospitals.

They also cut the side off the Megane to free the driver, in his 30s, who had suffered chest injuries. The boy had minor injuries. Both were taken to Russells Hall Hospital.

Police are investigating and have blocked the scene off to drivers and pedestrians.

Mr Edwards added: "It was a serious collision and investigations are being carried out by the police."

Four ambulances, a paramedic officer and the MERIT team attended the scene.
