The power tripped just after 9pm and areas including Penn, Compton, Claregate, Warstones and Tettenhall were all affected.
Western Power Distribution said they did not know what had caused the fault, but the company had managed to get around 1,600 homes back on the circuit within an hour.
Mandy Driscoll, spokeswoman for Western Power, said: "The circuit tripped at 9.09pm and there were 2,200 customers off supply.
"We managed to get about 1,600 homes back on supply within an hour so we had done quite well with this one."
