More than 1,000 people have spoken out about an overhaul of library services planned by a council which could see sites merged.

Officials at Staffordshire County Council say they are carrying out a review because there needs to be a greater focus on technology and providing services online.

They are yet to reveal exactly what the changes could involve but they are analysing the responses and one option being considered is the 'co-location of services.'

The county council, which currently has 43 building-based libraries, is reviewing the library service after figures revealed that there had been a 12 per cent decline in the number of library users over the past three years. Libraries chief Councillor Mike Lawrence said he was pleased at the number of people who has so far take part in a consultation on the plans.

He said: "We've had an excellent response so far and with just over a week to go, I urge everyone with an interest in our libraries to get involved in the conversation.

"We need people's help to adapt the service so that it meets the needs of our communities and is sustainable. Libraries have changed enormously in recent years to keep pace with new technology and how the internet has transformed the way people read books and magazines, access information, and even socialise."

The county council also runs six mobile libraries and two travelling libraries.

A series of public consultations have been held in recent weeks before final plans will now be drawn up. Councillor Lawrence previously said: "It is anticipated that within a library of the future, there will be greater emphasis on virtual resources."
