David Cameron and Ed Miliband are 'two cheeks on the same backside', according to UKIP's deputy leader.

Paul Nuttall told the Express & Star he would not choose between the Tory and Labour leaders when asked which he would prefer to see in Number 10.

His assessment comes as the Eurosceptics have emerged as a serious threat to the Tories following a by-election in which they beat the Conservatives to second place.

Mr Nuttall, deputy to UKIP leader Nigel Farage, is coming to Hednesford next week to hold a public meeting. The 37-year-old MEP in the North West is adamant that UKIP is taking as many votes from Labour as it is from the Conservatives.

Even so, it has not lost ground in the opinion polls and came second in the Wythenshawe and Sale East by-election last week. Asked whether UKIP was a left or right-wing party, Mr Nuttall said: "I don't do left or right. It's about common sense now."

When he was questioned on who he would choose for Prime Minister, David Cameron or Ed Miliband, Mr Nuttall said: "Neither because they are both just two cheeks on the same backside and you can quote me on that."

He is convinced that UKIP will do well in the council elections taking place in May, on the same day as the European Elections, where UKIP is predicted to increase its share of seats in Brussels and Strasbourg. "People don't vote two ways," he said.

"We're off to a fantastic start."

The public meeting is at the Aquarius Ballroom and Function Suite, Victoria Shopping Park, Hednesford, at 7pm on Thursday, February 27.
