The new Riverside retail and leisure complex will include names such as River Island, H&M, Marks & Spencer and Debenhams, as well as a multi-storey car park.

Two cinema chains have expressed an interest in moving into the development, although developers LXB Properties have so far refused to reveal their identities.

The cinema will be built on an adjoining site at Bridge Street where the former Chicago Rock Cafe stood.

It will stand alongside a new unit with shops and restaurants, while an existing footbridge over the River Sow will be revamped.

Plans illustrating the cinema proposals will be on display at the former Express & Star office at 14-15 Bridge Street, Stafford, from midday to 7pm today.

Our reporter Marion Brennan will be tweeting live from the exhibition.

Members of the public are welcome to visit the exhibition to view the plans, talk to the developers and their professional team, and to raise their views.

A planning application will be submitted in due course.

Councillor Mike Heenan, leader of Stafford Borough Council, said: "Stafford is one of the very few areas of the country where major town centre redevelopment is taking place.

"It is excellent to see the progress on the old Bridge Street Car Park. And I would urge anyone interested in these exciting plans to go to this exhibition and take the opportunity to talk to the developers."
