Six crews were called to the base of Surface Finishing Engineering Ltd, at Webnor Industrial Estate in Wolverhampton. It is believed thieves broke into the offices of the company and stole computer equipment before sparking the fire.

Police are investigating.

Fire crews were called to the scene at around 10pm last night and worked for more than four hours to bring the flames under control.

The company has been based at the industrial estate, in Ettingshall Road, since 1994.

Bosses today said they would have to bring in a temporary mobile office space for its 10 office staff but said production would continue.

Managing director Kirpal Dalver, aged 54, said: "Luckily the production area is OK so we can still carry on working.

"We're going to have to get a mobile office for the office staff but that is going to cost more money.

"It's terrible really.

"Earlier this year, we secured a huge contract with the aerospace industry and the Ministry of Defence. "We will still be able to stick to that because we have a disaster plan as a requirement of the contract."

West Midlands Police today confirmed the fire was being treated as arson.

Dudley Fire Station tweeted a picture of the scene last night.
