Police have launched an investigation after the raid at Shoe Zone, in Kidderminster, while it was closed. Thieves clambered onto the store roof in Vicar Street and prised a cover off a trap door to get inside.

Officers say they made their way into a stock room before bursting onto the shop floor. They stole handbags and several pairs of shoes and unsuccessfully attempted to break into the safe.

A kettle, toaster and microwave were also taken by the thieves who made their get-away through the rear fire exit, which opens onto a loading area.

West Mercia Police today said it is unknown how many items were stolen or what the value totals, but it will reach thousands of pounds. Around £150 of damage was caused to an office door and the roof in the break in.

Pc Rebecca Smith said: "Shoe Zone will be conducting an audit to establish exactly what was stolen.

"However, we do know that among the goods taken were a quantity of handbags, wellington boots and children's slippers. The offenders used black rubbish sacks to carry away the stolen shoes and bags."

It is thought the theft took place between 4pm on Sunday and 8.30am on Monday.

Police have asked anyone who saw anything suspicious to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. Shoe Zone refused to comment today.
