Funds crisis sees closure of Wednesbury GP centre

A GP surgery in Wednesbury will have to shut its doors in March, council bosses have said – but a £9 million replacement is in doubt because of lack of funding.

The Malling Health Centre in High Bullen was due to move into a new £9m health centre. But it has emerged the project is now on hold because no NHS cash is currently available.

Council bosses say the surgery will have to close in March for work to take place on a leisure centre next door.

Councillor Peter Hughes, for Wednesbury North ward, said: "I have received a letter from an elderly patient raising their concerns about the impact that will have on people who use Malling Health."

The health centre has been in the pipeline for years and originally the plan was for the £6m leisure centre next door to be built at a similar time, to minimise disruption.

Councillor Hughes said: "The NHS has got itself in a right mess with this. Malling Health will have to move by March because of the need to build the leisure centre."
