Officers attempted to stop the car as it travelled through West Bromwich at around 12.40am yesterday morning (Jan 29), but the car continued and failed to pull over when police put on their blue lights.

Officers from Sandwell pursued the car for a couple of minutes, but the driver's erratic nature forced officers to abandon the chase in the interests of public safety.

However moments later police on patrol on Popes Lane in Smethwick spotted the Audi and continued the chase.

Its occupants, three men, aged 24, 26 and 27, tried to flee but were quickly caught nearby and taken into police custody for questioning.

Stolen plates, taken from a car in Oldbury a few weeks ago, were found inside the vehicle.

All three were detained on suspicion of theft from a motor vehicle and taking the vehicle without the owner's consent.

The 24-year-old and 26-year-old were also arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. The 27-year-old is accused of dangerous driving and failing to stop.

Inspector Ian Massey from Sandwell Police said: "The quick actions of officers led to the arrest of these three men.

"The erratic nature and high speed of the driving posed a risk to other road users."

The three men, from Sandwell, all remain in police custody this evening.
