Large parts of the council-owned facility off Doxey Road in Stafford were submerged under water.

There are just under 800 spaces on the long-stay car park, which is used by shoppers at Sainsbury's. Drivers were having to leave their cars in the short-stay section of the car park instead. Sainsbury's spokesman Tom Parker said: "We're working with the council the owner of the car park - to ensure as many Sainsbury's customers as possible can use the short-stay car park."

"We'd like to re-assure our customers that our Stafford store continues to trade as normal."

Stafford Borough Council spokesman Will Conaghan added: "As it stands the long stay section of the car park is still closed."

The flooding comes after the region was battered by freak weather over the weekend. Giant hailstones, heavy downpours and booming thunder left homes damaged and communities shaken. Two houses in Oakfield Road, Wollescote, Stourbridge were directly struck by lightning on Sunday, causing a major roof fire.

A woman was treated for smoke inhalation, after the strike at the homes in Oakfield Road, Wollescote, but no one was injured.

Meanwhile, A wooden floor inside the Catholic at St Michael and the Holy Angels Church in High Street, West Bromwich, was set alight after the steeple was struck by lightning.

The Stafford car park reopened yesterday morning.
