Firefighters and police officers were called to help out the hapless driver, who got stuck under the bridge on Park Lane in Tipton at just after 3pm yesterday.

He had unsuccessfully attempted to free the yellow West Midlands Hire and Haulage vehicle himself, but letting down the tyres, before calling the emergency services.

Firefighter Mark Ellis, from Tipton fire station, said: "We attached a winch and managed to pull him out. We then called British Waterways who sent an engineer out to inspected the bridge."

West Midlands Police said the driver was cautioned for driving without due care and attention.
